The Barber – Attie Louw
The Barber
Attie Louw was born in the Calvinia district, but his family relocated to Worcester during the Great Depression in 1933. At just 20 years old, Attie enlisted in the Second World War, serving in the Natal Carbaniers regiment before later joining the infantry.
After participating in the North African offensive, he fought in Italy, where he discovered a talent for cutting his fellow soldiers' hair. After returning from the war, Attie teamed up with his friend, Alphie Taylor, to open a barber shop in Worcester.
In time, he married Ansie Everson of Opstal farm and became vital in expanding the farm alongside his father-in-law, Carl. Thanks to Attie's initiative, the first wine under the Opstal label was bottled in 1978, marking a new chapter for the family estate and solidifying its legacy in winemaking.
