Sixpence Our Abundant Water

Harnessing Natural Rainfall for Summer Irrigation

Managing Water in Slanghoek

Slanghoek has incredibly high rainfall. On average, it measures approximately 1,300 mm annually at our house and cellar. In some areas of the valley, this figure can soar to up to 2,000 mm per year.  However, the summer months bring a different story, as Slanghoek tends to become quite dry. That is why it is important for us to have water available in the dry months to use for supplementary irrigation.

We have a dam on the Slanghoek Mountainside that is 60 m higher than any of our crops. This strategic placement allows us to use the natural slopes to deliver water to our fields, allowing us to water the crops in a timely and accurate manner.
